Why does my radiator sound like someone is hitting it with a hammer?
A clanging that jolts you awake has a name: water hammer. In short, steam rushes down the pipe and hits trapped condensation. That water then slams into fittings and valves at speed.
In older housing stock, an NYC radiator making loud noise is a common complaint. It is one of the most common—and most alarming—heating complaints we see during the winter months.
Understanding Your Water Hammer Steam Boiler Issue
To fix the racket, you first need to understand how your system works. In a steam system, the boiler turns water into steam. That steam rises through the pipes and heats your radiators. As the steam cools, it condenses and runs back down the same pipes to the boiler.
When everything is working perfectly, this cycle is relatively quiet. However, trapped condensation turns the incoming steam into a high-speed plow. The steam shoves that water forward until it hits solid metal, and you hear the bang.
How to Get a Banging Radiator Fix in Brooklyn
First, check a couple of things yourself:
- Check the Pitch of the Radiator: Gravity is your friend here. A one-pipe steam radiator needs to tilt slightly toward the steam supply valve. For example, a settled floor tilts the radiator the wrong way. Water then pools at the far end instead of draining back to the boiler. You can often fix this by placing wooden shims under the feet on the side furthest from the pipe.
- Inspect the Air Vent: The small bullet-shaped vent on the side has to release cold air so steam can enter. As a result, a clogged or broken vent disrupts the pressure and traps moisture. Replacing a faulty vent is a common DIY fix.
- Fully Open the Valve: Keep the main supply valve at the base fully open, or fully closed. Half-open, steam and water fight for the same narrow opening, and the hammering gets worse.
When to Call in the Local Experts
Sometimes, a DIY vent replacement or a couple of wooden shims aren’t enough. Banging that persists points to something structural. Sagging pipes under the floorboards, a system-wide pressure imbalance, or sludge in the boiler will all do it.
