What is an RPZ device?

An RPZ is a backflow prevention device and is used to protect potable water supplies from contamination or pollution due to backflow. In water distribution systems, water is normally maintained at a significant pressure to enable water to flow from the tap, shower, or other fixtures.

Why do I need one?

The job of backflow preventers is to keep contaminated water from getting back into the city water supply. If there is a lower water pressure on the supply side of the irrigation system, contaminants can move backwards into the public water supply. In NYC an RPZ is required and must be tested, annually.
